Investigative Reporting

I’m a data-driven investigative MMJ. That means bringing together enterprise skills, the ability to find, analyze and interpret data, develop sources and the craftsmanship to bring it all together in a compelling narrative.

It’s exhilarating, it’s stressful, it’s exciting, and months of work on a project can be thrown out and reworked at the last minute. It’s the best job I’ve ever had.

Some of my work:

Racial Injustice in the Ohio Crime Victims Fund … Is the Ohio Victims of Crime fund awards more money to white claimants than minorities?

Rolling Investigation … New Beginnings Health Care. A nursing home company is bring in millions – and paying for Porshes… while Medicare patients languish in squalor.

Public Data, Private Storage … A whole bunch of private data, right out in the open. I discovered this just walking through a county building.

Cause and Effect … Fighting Downtown Fires

Illegal Dumping ...Chasing down litterbugs, leading to the city to block off the worst areas.

Unpaid taxes …I discovered a landlord had hundreds of properties rented out… but hadn’t been paying taxes. His total bill? More than $565,000.

Ohio Movie Money  … Ohio spent lots of money on tax credits for shows “produced” in the Mahoning Valley that never saw the light of day.
